Gites de Gorges
View of the entrance to your gite with view of the village in the background.
The Lot is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt regions of South West France. On the borders of the Dordogne and the Correze, it is a ramblers and artists paradise with rivers, lakes, caves, grottos and for the laziest of us, the tourist's railways. Also a gourmets delight famous for duck, foie gras, walnuts, chestnuts and of course many local and Cahors wines. On leaving England three years ago we fell in love with the rural charm and relaxed way of life found in the Lot. We, therefore, would like you to share the experience with us.
Laval de Cere
Our home is in Laval de Cere which is situated 600ft above sea level. Laval de Cere lies against the foothills of the Massif Central and at the entrance to the gorges of the river Cere, which we overlook. From your terrace and garden you can watch a variety of birds and red squirrels, walk the GR to the next village of Cominac or fish in the river or local lake.
River Cere
The village has two bars, a restaurant, a baker, a village shop, a chemist, a doctor and a railway station. From here you may travel north to Paris, via Brive-la-Gaillarde or east to the ski resort of Super Lioran. Currently, the two closest airports are Rodez in Aveyron and Limoges in Limousin, at just under two hours drive. Both airports are supported by the budget airline Ryanair. A new airport in Brive is due to open in 2008 and this will reduce travelling time to only one hour.
The gites each sleep 2-4 people and a cot is also available. The gites consist of a double bedroom with separate lounge/kitchen and a good sized bathroom (shower). The gites comes fully equipped with cooker, microwave and fridge. All crockery, cooking utensils and linen are also provided.
The gites form the top floor of our house and have their own separate access from the rear terrain parking, making the apartments on the ground level. (see top photo)
Also, for your use, is a splash pool with sun beds, BBQ, patio table and chairs with sun shades. Our canoe can also be used to explore the lake and rivers. On your arrival you will find a welcome tray of local cheese and wine.

Chateau Castelnau
The local market towns of Bretenoux, Beaulieu and St Ceré are all within a few minutes drive. Bretenoux with its' imposing Chateau Castelnau, market square and timber houses has a good selection of shops, supermarkets and restaurants.
Beaulieu sur Dordogne (Correze) is a medieval town with a 12c abbey. The river Dordogne has swimming, canoes or daily sails of a flat bottom boat called "Gabare" used by the ancient boatmen for transporting their wares to other ports.
St Ceré is a busy market town dating from the middle ages with a market square and half-timbered houses. Visit the Jean Lureat museum workshop.
Chateau de Anglais
A few of our other favourite places to visit are:
Rocamadour, clinging to the cliffs of the Alzou canyon is the second most visited site in France and is still a holy place for pilgrims today. Make a special visit at night to see an amazing sunset and the illuminated cliffs.
Autoire, tucked in a valley with a 33m waterfall and a spectacular view of the Bave valley and river. The village has many old houses, manor and the Chateau de Anglais.
Figeac dates back to the 9th century Benedictine abbey with architecture from the middle ages to the 19th century.
St Cirq Lapopie
St Cirq Lapopie is perched on the cliff above the Lot valley with ancient streets and lovely old house. This is well worth the 2 hour drive through the pretty Lot valley. Morning markets are held weekly in most towns with special night markets in the summer. Many art and music festivals are held throughout the summer months. We hope this brief tour of the lot will help you choose your holiday destination. More information is available from the local tourist offices.
